25 Jul Vacated apartment 3 months before end of lease. Drove by today and saw the apartment had new tenants. Am I still on the hook for the remainder of the old lease?
We moved out June 30. Paid the July rent and turned in our keys July 8. Strange thing was, they called my wife to tell her she had a package, which she picked up today, but they never made mention of the new tenants. My wife just happened to see it on their office board. We drove around and, sure enough, a family was in the process of moving in.
So are we absolved from the remainder of the lease because of this? And, if so, are we owed a partial refund for the month of July? I'm in Mississippi if that matters.
Update: We just discovered our online payment portal has been inactivated. Wife called the leasing office to find out why since that was how we know what is owed for rent and utilities each month. The lady said we "could just pay in person" (they charge more to pay in person, btw). My wife asked if the apartment had been leased again, and the lady said no, they're not allowed to do that. When my wife said we drove by and it looked like someone was in the process of moving in, the lady said she'd talk to the manager and call us back tomorrow.
