18 Jul Property Value & Power Lines Around Home?
Looking to buy and a good number of homes are so attractive to me BUT then in the middle of the clear, blue sky, are power lines with many lines going from post to post. I am not so concerned about possible health effects as that seems like a myth. My concern is what an incredible eyesore these are and how I have to believe it would affect resale value.
Assuming I can get past that myself and decide I can live with those nasty lines in my sky, I worry about one day when I go to sell the home. Do people generally care about these and write off homes with power lines on the street or across the backyard? I am likely one of those people so I have to imagine others are the same and if even a few potential buyers are turned off it is of course concerning before I get invested in any of these homes.
I saw some people say that the "discount" is already priced into the listings…but how would you know that? Comparing it to the appreciation of nearby homes doesn't seem so logical because maybe some of those have undergone renovations or have other things going for them that this home doesn't which makes them appreciate more. Maybe previous buyer didn't care so didn't buy at a "discount"…so many variables that I find it hard to account for a discount already in the listing, so my question goes back to basics: does the presence of power lines materially affect the value of a home?
